Context and background.

The village community of Cheffou is located in the Baham arrondissement in the Haut-Plateau department of Cameroon. The village population of Cheffou and surroundings is approximately 4,200 inhabitants, who mainly live from agriculture and livestock farming.

The village has a primary school cycle with 2 kindergartens and 2 primary schools with a total of 760 pupils. Among the many needs, the supply of clean drinking water to the village community appears most critical:

  • The rate of illness from contaminated water is very high — villagers draw drinking water from unhygienic rivers and streams
  • The frequency of these diseases leads to constant interruption of the school year and a very high failure rate among pupils
  • Building a suitable water supply point at their own expense proves impossible

Project goals.

Improving living conditions in Baham-Cheffou through the construction of modern water supply and the participative promotion of hygiene and health-promoting measures.

Activities.

  • Construction of a water well with solar-powered pump station for clean drinking water supply
  • Approx. 3,000 villagers (75% of families) will be regularly supplied with hygienic drinking water
  • Water tower with 3,000-litre tank, filled four times daily — daily water volume of 12,000 litres
  • Information campaign on "Hygiene and Health with Focus on Clean Drinking Water"
  • Training selected villagers for maintenance of the water facilities
