Context and background.
Bandja is a municipality in Cameroon in the Haut-Nkam department in the west. The municipality comprises small villages with a total of 31,000 inhabitants.
The people in the Bandja region live in a precarious situation, as many health deficits remain unaddressed:
- Child mortality is high because young mothers know nothing about vaccination and nutrition
- Disease rates are very high due to lack of basic hygiene or health regulations
- Chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure are on the rise
- Many medicines are unavailable because they are unaffordable for the village population
- Information about causes and treatment of chronic diseases in everyday life is lacking
- Training of local health workers in diagnosis and infection control has not taken place for years
