What it's about.

Atotchi is a rural community in the highlands of Foreke-Dschang in western Cameroon. Three village districts — Akapnog, Nzen Nzèh and Zen Lisseng — share around 3,400 inhabitants. Until 2020, women and children walked hours every day to distant wells, often with questionable water quality.

At the community's request we financed a central water station from 2020: a deep well, a solar-powered pump station, an elevated tank and three tap points — one per district. The installation delivers up to 12,000 litres of clean water per day.

How we work.

We financed material, solar modules and technical specialists. The community provided land, helpers, the local construction company and ongoing maintenance. A local water committee runs the installation and decides on minor repairs — we audit, advise and publish the balance.

  • Solar panels cover the entire energy demand — no running electricity costs
  • Local water committee maintains the installation independently
  • Hygiene training for 12 multipliers
  • Handover to the community in 2021 — fully self-managed since

"We used to get up at four to fetch water. Today we turn on the tap — and the children arrive at school well-rested."

What's next.

The system has been running reliably since 2021. A follow-up project to add two more tap points for the growing community is in preparation. Current campaigns are listed on the Projects page.
