Seven days of joint practice: specialists from Germany and Cameroon trained local healthcare workers in the Bandja district — focusing on paediatrics, general medicine, gynaecology and breast cancer prevention. 31,000 people benefit long-term.
The Bandja district in western Cameroon has around 31,000 inhabitants — and only a handful of specialists. Local healthcare workers do remarkable work but are often on their own when complex cases or rare diagnoses arise.
Together with Cameroonian colleagues, specialists from Germany travelled to Bandja and gave practical training over one week — at the bedside, with real cases.
No lectures. No slides. Joint rounds, ultrasound diagnostics, consultations across four specialties. Local colleagues led, external specialists supported, asked questions and passed on methods.
The trained staff continue their work — with expanded diagnostic tools, new contacts and a WhatsApp network through which difficult cases can be discussed directly with the German colleagues. A bridge that lasts.
